What can we do about people who do ‘evil’?

Dear Amaris, I have a social media account where I’ve come across a person who posts about killing cats, saying that he kills cats and will continue to do so. What should I do? Karma spell? Hex? Curse? What he is doing is wrong, and horrible.

No, don’t hex or curse. Karma will take its own course. If you wish harm upon anyone (particularly during a spell-casting), that harmful energy will come back to you threefold.

There will always be horrible people doing horrible things in this world – it’s part of the full spectrum we live in. We will never be able to stop all the wars and ‘punish’ all those who do ‘wrong’.

The healing power of acceptance

One thing you can do is to meditate on the diversity of this world, how everything good must have an opposite and vice versa. Contemplate why you think there is greed and ‘evil’ in this world, and why you think there must be something of everything, why everything good must have an opposite and vice versa. What good can come of the bad? What bad can come of the good, and what, in turn, can that lead to? This will help you understand and accept how things are, and realise that some things we have no control over. Our personal challenge is to find peace within ourselves, despite all those horrible things that happen outside of our control.

So how can we help?

This person who posted about killing cats, he may even be lying, just posting stuff to get attention. But if he is indeed killing cats, then he is carrying some unhealed wound. No one who is whole and peaceful would do such things. So if you really want to stop him, I would send him plenty of loving, healing energy such as described in this Healing Spell.

Send this energy to him and wish him all the best, stating to the universe and to his soul that you wish for him to heal for his highest good, and to not wish harm upon another being. But if you do send this energy, it can only be done after you have accepted that he is not doing it from ‘evil’ intent. If you still feel angry and upset, you can’t send him the loving energy that is necessary. If you find yourself still harbouring resentment and anger towards him, you must first get this out, through EFT tapping or anger releases (google these for info and instructions), or through the type of meditation described above. We must first heal ourselves, before we can heal others.

We can’t change people or circumstances, only our reactions to them. And when we change our reactions, often we find that the circumstances change as a result. Change starts within us.



Protection against threats

How to protect yourself against negative energies and outside threats can vary depending on the situation, and it often involves several different techniques to cover all bases.

Today I was contacted by someone asking how to protect themselves from a stalker.  She has a woman following her, damaging her car and giving her evil looks in the store.  I’m sharing my response here in case it can help you too.


I would suggest that you make a little protection sphere around yourself, your home, you husband, and your car. This can be done through the visualisation meditation I describe below, but can be enhanced by creating the following ‘amulet’, if you are able to acquire the ingredients. If not, just do the meditation – either way is fine.


Angelica creates a shield against harmful energy

Protection Amulet: Take a white cloth (or white paper) and wrap it around (a) Angelica Root or Angelica leaves (2) 1 Amethyst, Black Tourmaline or Black Obsidian crystal (3) a piece of paper cut out in the shape of a house, with your and your husband’s names written in brown pen – you can also draw your car on here. When you draw/write this, focus wholly on the items and persons you are protecting. Really conjure them up in your mind. Focus is imperative. Also ask the crystals and herb to protect you and yours from harm – this activates their protective energies. Wrap it up and hold it in your hands or keep it in front of you while doing the meditation.

Protection Meditation: Breathe deeply and relax into a meditative state. Invite your spirit guides and any protective spirits to join and assist you in protection. Now imagine your husband, your home, your car, and yourself, all in the room with you. Ask that they all be protected and safe. Then imagine pulling down divine, protective energy from above you – breathe in to pull it into your body, and breathe out to spread the energy into a protective sphere around you. Keep breathing, and visualise this bright ball of divine light surrounding and immersing you and your husband, house and car. Feel it burning like an impenetrable shield. Know that you will be safe; feel it in your heart. Do this for as long as you like – I’d recommend at least 10 minutes. When you’re done, thank the spirits for protecting you, and know that you have this sphere around you at all times. Any time you want, breathe deeply to ‘top it up’ and feel it strengthen around you.

Finally, one powerful trick I would suggest is that you send some love towards this person who is stalking you. She must be troubled and hurt if she is doing this sort of thing, and if you direct fear towards her, you are feeding the negative energy flow and inviting more of her into your life. But if you instead send love towards her, this high-vibe, caring energy can melt her negativity and help her heal, or at least create a shield which simply will not resonate with her energies, and she will naturally drift away from you.  Put your hand over your heart and feel compassion for this confused person, feel your loving heart and direct this love towards her.  Wish her all the best.  It will feel a bit strange at first, but it makes perfect sense.

Who is your Mother?

mother earthThis post is for those of you who feel emotionally neglected or otherwise let down by your parents.

I’ve recently broken off with mine, and it hurts to sever familiar ties and cut off from people who were once close to us.  But yesterday I had an epiphany I wanted to share with you, in case it might help you too.

I realised that I was born to my earthly mother for divine reasons not yet fully unravelled.  We chose to be in each other’s physical lives, and that must be respected.  But when that relationship becomes destructive and harmful, it’s time to move away.

Without wanting to go into details here about how my parents have caused me harm and abuse, I just want to tell you what came to me yesterday in meditation.

Pachamama is the Spanish word for Mother Earth.  While ‘Mother’ is my physical mother, and ‘Mum’ is my wonderful mother-in-law, Pachamama is my true mother.  The calling I hear from the stars is because I am one of them; because that is where I belong.  I am a divine being, destined for good things in this life; to spread love and connection.  When I hug and climb trees, stroke and lie in grass, whisper to flowers and play with fallen leaves, smell the earth and breathe in evening mist ~ that is me being caressed by Mother Earth, my dear and ever-loving Pachamama.

My physical mother chose her destructive path in this life, and though I have tried my whole life, I realise now that there is nothing I can do to change it.  I can love her if I wish, I can sympathise with her, but I must never empathise with her, because those are not my burdens to bear.

I can learn from her, and take the positive lessons moving forward.  The only mistake I can make now is look back.  The advice comes to me: Look around you and survey your current conditions, and you will see how great your life has become and the wondrous gifts you carry.

Never forget who your true Mother is.  Pachamama is always there, with her infinite wisdom, understanding and insights, her caresses and subtle whispers of love.


Pachamama said to me: We have been whispering to you incessantly from the start.  Stop listening to the destructive voices of your low-vibration parents, and tune in to our divine song, and you will find the peace and love you seek, and finally find the strength to fulfil your deepest and most secret dreams. 

I hope the advice in this post will help you as it has me, and that it brings you some comfort as we all walk this winding, perplexing and exciting path of life.

Healing through journalling

One of the main tools I have used in my life, to get to know myself and to improve my mental and emotional health, is journalling.  People often underestimate the power of writing, but to me it has been the best friend and therapist one could ever ask for.

If you have never journalled before, it may feel daunting to sit down and write about your life.  Many wonder where to start.  But when you sit down in a quiet space and put pen to paper, it usually comes naturally after just a short while.  It’s as easy as starting with “Today I have done…” or “Today I feel…” and see what follows.

healing through journallingIt’s an exciting journey inward and a great way to reach insights about yourself and your life.  By having it in black on white, it becomes clear and concrete.  An issue which before seemed insurmountable, suddenly feels untangled and manageable.

A day of your life is so full of impressions, thoughts, feelings, ideas and problems.  Journalling allows you to take a step back and reflect on all of this – and reflection is essential if we want to learn from our experiences.  In writing, you can examine your thoughts and patterns, and begin to release those you find unhelpful.

It’s also a way to vent.  We all carry suppressed feelings of anger and sadness, feelings that are often difficult to express.  When you write, you can let out all these frustrations without censoring yourself.  It’s important for two reasons – this way you will let out your feelings in a safe space and not risk spilling these onto friends and loved ones, thus harming your relationships; and also, when you vent in writing, you are actually releasing these feelings from your energy field, leaving room for new light to enter.

Since you are writing only to yourself, you can be as honest as you want – and you may surprise yourself.  Honesty leads to insights, and insights lead to change and growth.

Other than daily journalling for pleasure or insight, here are a few other types of journalling for specific purposes.

♥ Journalling to release negative feelings

Sit down somewhere where you feel at ease.  You can light a candle for atmosphere if you wish, or use a specific colour candle for your intended purpose.  Write on paper or on a computer, whichever you feel more comfortable with.

Begin to write about the situation you wish to solve.  What is it like, how do you feel about it?  Don’t worry about punctuation, grammar or in any way censoring yourself.  This is to release the rubbish you carry inside you, so just let it all out.  Don’t pause to think, just keep writing.  This is called freewriting or stream-of-consciousness writing.  This is pure venting, and extremely healing.  You may feel that afterwards you want to scream, cry, or punch a pillow.  By all means, do!

After you have done this release, do something nice that brings you peace or comfort – have a bath, a cup of tea, go for a walk, watch a movie; anything.

♥ Journalling to solve a certain situation

Simply write about your situation answering these four questions:

1. What is the situation?
2. How do I feel about the situation?
3. How would I rather feel about the situation?
4. What can I do to change things, so that I will feel that way instead?

♥ Journalling to connect with your Higher Self

Journalling is also a great way to receive clear guidance from your spirit guides and Higher Self.  Write down the questions you have, and then wait for the answer to come.  It may come immediately, and you find that the pen is almost moving of its own accord.  Or it might take a little bit of time and focus, in which case don’t give up, just keep writing until you feel like the answer is coming.healing through journalling

In this type of writing it’s easy to be sceptical, to stop and say, “Well, isn’t it just me writing these things?”  But think of it this way – whether you are channeling your higher beings or just reaching deep into your subconscious to find answers – if the answers are helpful, does it really matter?  Your Higher Self would much rather see you continue this practice with curiosity and joy, rather than questioning the process and doubting yourself.  Play with it, have fun and see what you can learn!


♥ Journalling to converse with your Inner Child

Many of us have some unfinished business with our inner child.  They may need healing or conversation.  You can journal to reach out to him/her, and see what issues may still be affecting your life today, or work on a specific memory which is still hurting.  Try writing with your subdominant hand when writing the voice of your inner child.  See what comes up, and soothe and heal the wounds your inner child bares.

Finally, I’d just like to mention that your journal is a great place to write down your gratitude lists (seriously powerful way to improve your life, I promise!), and also your goals, ideas, and things you’d like to achieve.  Again, by having them transformed from vague ideas in your mind to concrete words on paper, you are giving them power and weight.  This is the first step to success.

I hope you give journalling a go, and see what wonderful things, ideas, and healing may come to you, and the many ways in which it can empower you and change your life.

How to slowly improve your life

We all want to create the best possibility reality for ourselves. We live our lives as best we can, making the most of what we have, while naturally and instinctively watching and learning from other people and finding inspiration in their choices. The trap is where we compare ourselves to others and see something we want, but for some reason feel that we can’t have it.

The other day I watched a health vlog by a gorgeous Australian lady who was fiercly advocating activity, raw foods and salads, morning smoothies; the lot. I envied her active lifestyle – living in small-town Australia, with daily walks through beautiful forest paths right on her doorstep, followed by a dip in the ocean on a sandy beach somewhere where the sun always shines – while I’m sitting in a small tenth-floor apartment in a rough area of cold and rainy London.

I thought if only I lived there, I would surely be just as active and healthy all the time!

But then I immediately remembered that we create the circumstances – we can’t wait around for them to happen.  I don’t have to live in sunny Australia in order to live that kind of active lifestyle. I have woods a busride away, beautiful London parks and stunning Thames river walks; and while I can’t just pop down for an ocean swim, I could always go to the local outdoor swimming pool.

That’s when I realised the most important question we have to ask ourselves when we come across something which we long for, something we feel envious over – How can I apply it to my life?

Words carry immense power, and an efficiently and positively posed question will always produce useful answers.

Similarly, a few years ago I was living in an apartment where I had no altar (my previous altar had been in my countryside residence). I kept wishing and wanting, imagining the garden I would have one day where I could build a great, big stone-table altar, and I kept thinking, that’s when it will happen, I just have to wait until that day comes.  But that’s wishful and time-wasting thinking, and one day it hit me that I should just create my altar anyway, just put together what I can, city flat or not. After all, we create our lives HERE AND NOW. So I did, and it’s great! And by having and using my city altar now, I am aligned with the energies of enjoying my altar, thus aligning with a future of having an even better altar.  Change and improvements always happen incrementally, and we have to start somewhere, right?

Instead of feeling sorry for ourselves and wishing our circumstances were different, just ask ourselves, how can I bring this into my life, as it stands today?  How can I apply this to my situation?

Anything is possible, if only we are willing to start somewhere.

Immediate Centering

I talk a lot about centering and the importance of being centered.  When you’re not centered, you have your mind and energy focused outside of yourself and your body – in the past or future, or in someone else’s thoughts and opinions.  It will make you feel anxious, irritable, restless, and easily affected by outside influences.

The centering exercise in my book, “The Essence of Magick,” requires a little bit of time and focus, but what if you are out in public and suddenly feel yourself becoming anxious or stressed, and you need to center yourself immediately?

One day I was out walking, and suddenly an embarrassing memory popped into my head, and my stomach automatically turned to knots and I began hunching and feeling uncomfortable.

Then I remembered that, if a thought makes me feel uncomfortable, I don’t have to think about it!  So I just said to myself, “I’m right here.”  It brought me straight back into the present, into my body and my mind, and everything old and negative quickly retreated.

The power of those three words startled me, and I began using them frequently, whenever I felt outside myself, anxious about something, worrying about pleasing other people, etc.  “I’m right here.”  It sucks me back into the present moment, and in the present, there is nothing that can’t be dealt with.

If you’re ever feeling on edge, worrying about something, focusing on something outside of your immediate surroundings which is bringing you discomfort, just say those three words – “I’m right here” – and feel your mind and soul uniting immediately in your body; present and at peace.

Wiccan tools for the beginner

Derek asks: What are some ingredients that would be most suitable for starting off?

wiccan toolsGetting started with Wicca and magick is a very exciting time.  So exciting, in fact, that many of us easily get carried away with acquiring tools and ingredients to build our very first altar.  There is nothing wrong with that, of course, but we mustn’t forget that our most important tool is our mind.  Any ingredients and accessories we use in magick are charged by our mind, and if your mind isn’t trained and sharpened, then your magick will suffer.  Tools help us enter into the right mindset and keep us focused, which is very helpful during spell casting, but they won’t do the work for us.

So, while you read and learn and practice and gather your supplies, remember that you must begin to train your mind as well.  When you acquire or make a new tool, a great exercise is to cleanse and charge it – a ritual which serves to connect you to the tool and charge it with its magickal purpose (fully explained in my ebook, The Essence of Magick).  Daily meditation will also help you focus your mind and make you more powerful each day that passes.

incenseTo your question, then – what ingredients and tools are good to start with?  I always say, go with your heart.  Each situation is unique, so think about what kind of spells you are most keen to start with.  Is it for love, abundance, well-being?  Look online and you will find lists of the purposes and correspondences of herbs, incenses and gemstones – these are relatively inexpensive and are easy to buy online if not in-store.  They can quickly be charged with your intent and used in many different rituals.  Find gemstones, incenses and herbs which correspond with what purposes you feel most drawn to at this time.

Other easy and useful things are candles (look at colour correspondences online or in my ebook), a cup for holding sacred water or to drink any magickal brews, sea salt for cleansing and protection, and a notebook from which you can create your first Book of Shadows.  You can carve your own wand out of a branch.  Until you find an athame that suits you, you can use your arm to direct energy.

This will give you a good place to start, without costing you too much.  Gather information where you can, meditate, spend time in nature connecting to Mother Earth, and most importantly, play and have fun, and follow your intuition – s/he knows best!

Why spells backfire

Bea has cast a spell which seems to have backfired on her. She lost a tenant and created a protection jar for the house and future tenant which was meant to absorb negativity and protect the house.  But after the casting, things went downhill, and Bea lost her other tenant and ended up in financial and legal troubles. 

Bea says: “While I chanted the spell I thought about all the negative energy, guilt, etc… and asked for this jar to suck up the bad and lower energies from the past and protect from any future and keep away people with bad energies. MY QUESTION: Did I do something wrong?”

Hi Bea,

When you cast, in order to attract the best results, you should think only about what you want, not what you don’t want.  I understand the theory behind asking the jar to suck up the negative energies, but it sounds like you focused too much on the bad stuff, with fear and worry about the future.  For that kind of spell I would instead suggest that you create a ‘positive energy jar’ or ‘light jar’, which you charge with positivity, joy, good fortune and such.  You could put in it any items that to you represent good fortune, and also gemstones and/or orgonite that promote a happy home, a stable income, etc.  Also colours – the colour blue is good for a peaceful home; green is for a good income, for example.casting spells

While charging it, you focus solely on what kind of tenant you want (i.e. no thoughts towards what you don’t want, or anything bad that has already happened), how you want to feel when you have that tenant living in the house, how good it feels to have enough money, and so on. This visualisation will also help further if it carries on in your mind also after you’ve cast the spell – i.e. whenever you think about the house, remind yourself of that happy image and the feelings you had during the visualisation.

You might want to try it again, if you are able to dig up the jar and start over.  Don’t worry about the spell you cast before or any negativity that would come of it, because your mind is incredibly powerful and can fundamentally affect your life, so just start shifting your focus straightaway towards positive things, any little thing that has actually worked out; anything you can feel thankful for.  And create a good fortune jar if you want to speed things along.

Voodoo and distance energy

Anonymous asks: Do you know how voodoo dolls work?  Is there some sort of energy connection between the person the doll represents and the doll itself?


For the purposes of this post I am not discussing the Vodou religion, which is an ancient and complex tradition, of which voodoo dolls are but a miniscule aspect. 

Voodoo dolls, as they are usually represented in media, are often used to control or harm other people.  They can also be used for good – remember, wishing harm on someone else will only bring harm on yourself eventually – heed the Wiccan Rede: “What ye send forth comes back to thee.”

To explain how it works – since we are all connected through energy, we can affect another person wherever they are.  I perform distance healing on people in other countries – distance doesn’t matter if you connect through energy, which we can do through our mind.  Quantum physics show that particles can affect each other across vast expanses of space, so science and spiritualists alike are coming to understand that distance doesn’t hinder us in the way that we have previously thought.

When I send healing energy from a distance I simply focus on the person in order to direct the energy their way, but it helps to look at a picture of them in order to keep my mind focused.  Voodoo dolls work in the same manner – when the voodoo worker has associated the doll with a person, the doll then becomes a powerful physical representation of that person, which helps the voodoo worker stay focused on them throughout the ritual.

So the energy connection between the doll and the person is conjured up by the mind of the voodoo worker – to anyone else, the doll wouldn’t have the same connection, because the association wouldn’t be there.  Our minds are powerful tools!

We can use this knowledge to do some good in the world – you don’t have to create a doll (although you can if you want, of course), but you can focus on any person, situation, area, or even country, and send loving energies and intentions their way – and while you’re doing it you’re automatically raising your own vibration, thus inviting more good stuff into your own life – a clear win-win!
